Hong Kong’s Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has implemented a rodent surveillance programme that uses thermal imaging cameras combined with artificial intelligence to detect rodent activity in urban alleys and other high‑risk locations. The system captures nighttime thermal images over consecutive nights and applies AI analysis to identify heat signatures consistent with rodents, enabling targeted live‑capture operations; FEHD reporting attributes a substantial increase in live captures following deployment, with citywide figures that are higher than the previous year.
Operationally, the thermal imaging and AI approach is intended to improve the spatial precision and timeliness of rodent monitoring compared with traditional bait‑based surveys, allowing resources to be focused on confirmed hotspots and informing follow‑up sanitation and infrastructure interventions. Effective use depends on camera placement, image quality, algorithm accuracy for local species and environments, and integration with field response protocols.
