Merlin Bird ID is an app likened to Shazam for birdsong, and it taps into the world's largest database of bird sightings, sound and photos to share a fun way to identify birds. With this free app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, users can ask simple questions, explore birds in their region, upload photos, and record singing birds to learn something about the natural world.

"Birding" is no longer a pastime for retirees, since Gen Z is increasingly picking up birdwatching as a low-cost, low-pressure way to unplug and be present outdoors. On TikTok, #birdwatching, #birdtok and #birding content are only becoming more popular. After discovering the hobby through social media, this younger, unexpected group is finding themselves quickly drawn in to its mix of mindfulness, mild adventure and the dopamine hit of seeing or hearing something rare.
