Studio J. Bridgland has realized ZOLAND·Emei Resort in the region of Emeishan, China, as a mountainous boutique retreat that embodies a philosophy of architectural quietude.
Studio J. Bridgland effectively transformed a collection of deteriorated structures into a sanctuary that appears to grow organically from its forested setting. The 2,900-square-meter project, which is organized as a staggered, village-like composition of buildings that reference traditional stone dwellings nestled into the hillside, with pitched roofs and deep eaves reinterpreted through a contemporary lens to bridge the region's architectural heritage with modern sensibilities. The design prioritizes the landscape above all else, employing a restrained material palette that includes hand-chiseled textured concrete at the entrance, traditional Leshan gray tiles on the dining hall roof, cedar framing internally, and schist stone sourced directly from Emei Mountain for the walls.
