A research team led by Dr. Tae Ann Kim at Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) has developed a self-healing, highly recyclable, smart polymer. This advanced material uses a specially designed molecule that can switch between different forms, making it easy to reshape, repair, and reuse. Depending on its processing, the material can be as soft and flexible as a rubber band or as stiff and rigid as glass.

One of its standout features is its ability to detect and repair damage in real-time. When cracks or breaks occur, the material glows under light, making it easy to spot damage. It can self-heal when exposed to heat or light, reducing waste and extending its lifespan. Even at the end of its use, this polymer can break down into its original components, allowing for easy recycling—even when mixed with regular plastics.
