Artillery Sheds restoration will preserve two former 1930s military buildings at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, while introducing contemporary mechanical and accessibility systems. The structures were repurposed by Donald Judd in the 1980s, when he added Quonset-hut-style roofs and replaced garage doors with quartered windows. The renovation will retain the buildings’ existing character while adding kicker braces around the metal roof edges to improve wind resistance and form properly sized gutters. Runoff from the new drainage system will feed a restored landscape designed for the surrounding site.
The project also introduces low-energy environmental controls without conventional air conditioning. Existing concrete expansion joints will accommodate solar-powered filtration systems that circulate minimal filtered fresh air, while treated facade glass will create positive pressure to reduce dust infiltration and moderate interior temperatures. An ADA-compliant walking path will connect restored areas of the landscape.
