CAW Architects, a San Francisco-based firm recognized for its sensitive stewardship of Northern California's architectural heritage, has completed three transformative performance venues that collectively redefine the state's cultural landscape. The projects include the $41 million rehabilitation of San Francisco's historic Castro Theatre, the topographical 'resculpting' of UC Berkeley's Hearst Greek Theatre, and the ground-up construction of Sacramento's Channel 24.
Each of CAW Architects' transformative performance venues addresses distinct challenges of preservation, accessibility, and modern technical demands while ensuring these beloved gathering places remain vibrant and future-ready. For example, the Castro Theatre project, undertaken in collaboration with preservation architects Page & Turnbull and theater consultants Shalleck Collaborative, features a first-of-its-kind bespoke movable orchestra floor system that allows the venue to transition seamlessly between a classic raked seating configuration for film and a flat floor for standing-room live music performances.
